Everything you've wanted to know about electrolysis-answered!

What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a safe, FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal that works by targeting the hair follicle with a small electric current. This current destroys the follicle’s ability to regrow hair. It’s the only hair removal treatment recognized as permanent by the FDA
What causes unwanted hair growth?
Unwanted hair growth can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions like PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), certain medications, and life changes such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. Electrolysis is effective for treating unwanted hair regardless of the underlying cause.
Are the technicians at Avanti Electrolysis licensed?
Yes! All electrolysis treatments at Avanti Electrolysis are performed by Dianna Decker, LE, CPE-a board-certified, state-licensed electrologist. Is electrolysis safe?
Yes, electrolysis is very safe when performed by a trained, licensed professional. At Avanti Electrolysis, we follow strict hygiene and sterilization protocols as outlined by the American Electrology Association to ensure every treatment is safe, clean, and comfortable.
Is electrolysis painful?
Everyone experiences sensation differently. Most clients describe electrolysis as a slight tingling or stinging feeling, which is manageable. The advanced Blend Modality used at Avanti Electrolysis is designed to maximize comfort while delivering effective results. We also tailor each session to your skin type, sensitivity, and hair characteristics.
How long does each treatment take?
The length of each appointment depends on many factors including hair growth cycles, previous hair removal methods such as tweezing and shaving. Heredity, hormones, medication and even stress combined with the amount of hair you want to remove and the size of the treatment area all play a role in the length of treatment and varies by individual.
What is the difference between laser hair removal and electrolysis?
Laser hair removal is a long-term method of hair reduction that lasts for up to two years. Expect 45-90% of hair growth reduction. Laser can in some cases actually stimulate hair growth and make hair coarser and darker, especially on the hormonal areas (face, nipples, stomach). Laser effectiveness depends on the amount of pigment in hair, people with light hair (blond, white, gray) and people with dark skin are even harder to treat. Electrolysis is permanent and works on all skin and hair color. Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method, as corroborated by the FDA.
Why not use temporary methods like waxing or shaving?
For the obvious reason, they are just that, temporary. These methods can irritate the skin and may cause ingrown hairs, which can be painful and as unsightly as the hair itself. Temporary methods can exacerbate the problem, and compound the hair growth. Electrolysis remains the only permanent hair removal method recognized by the FDA. Temporary hair removal methods such as waxing, tweezing, shaving and threading are just that – temporary. Laser hair removal cannot claim hair removal, only permanent hair reduction.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments depends on various factors such as the area being treated, the density and thickness of the hair, hormonal influences, and how consistently you follow your treatment schedule. During your consultation with Dianna Decker, she will advise a treatment plan that is best suited to your needs.
Is electrolysis safe and effective for teens?
Yes, electrolysis can be a safe and empowering solution for teens who are experiencing early or excessive hair growth due to genetics, hormones, or medical conditions. It’s especially helpful for areas that cause emotional distress, like the face or arms. At Avanti Electrolysis, we create a supportive, age-appropriate experience and always require parental or guardian consent for minors.
Can men benefit from electrolysis?
Absolutely. Men often seek electrolysis to manage excessive hair growth on the back, shoulders, neck, or chest, or for more defined grooming like shaping a beard or removing stray hairs. Whether it’s for aesthetics, hygiene, comfort, or athletic performance, electrolysis offers a permanent and effective solution tailored to male hair types and skin.
Is electrolysis a good option for athletes?
Yes, many athletes choose electrolysis to reduce body hair for hygiene, performance, or aesthetic reasons. Removing hair can minimize friction, make skin easier to tape or treat, and highlight muscle definition. Electrolysis is especially popular among swimmers, cyclists, bodybuilders, and dancers because it offers a permanent solution—eliminating the need for constant shaving or waxing before competitions or performances.
Is electrolysis effective for people with PCOS or other hormonal conditions?
Yes, electrolysis is especially beneficial for those experiencing hormone-related hair growth, such as with PCOS. It can permanently remove the coarse, dark hairs that often appear on the face, chest, or abdomen due to elevated androgen levels.
Can electrolysis help transgender and non-binary individuals?
Absolutely. Electrolysis is a popular and affirming choice for many transgender and non-binary people as part of gender-affirming care. It is effective, permanent, and safe across all skin tones and hair types.
Can hair in moles be treated?
Moles can be safely treated with electrolysis. But moles should first be examined by a dermatologist. For your protection, we request that you bring a note from your doctor to know this has been done.
Can women begin or continue electrolysis treatments during pregnancy?
Electrolysis has not been proven harmful during pregnancy, but out of an abundance of caution, many electrologists limit or modify treatment during this time. If you’re pregnant, we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider and discussing your options during your consultation.
